And as suddenly as the race started, it's over. The PA congratulates the winning jockey and owner, and notifies the betting crowd of the order of finish. Everything goes back to quiet for another twenty minutes until the next race is ready to begin the warmup process again. The crowd hurries back inside to the warm confines of the racebook, bets on the next race are prepared as the current wins and losses are quickly forgotten.

So it goes for ten races most Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights in the winter. Behind the Target, near all the strip-malls and roads that bear the race course's moniker and horseracing names; Turfway Crossing, Turfway Road, Thoroughbred Boulevard. Whether it's out of tradition or persistence, profit or subsidy, there's horse racing in Northern Kentucky. A bastion of an older era and funky neon signs amongst all the conveniences and flashly corporate signs of the modern world. Walking through the racetrack doesn't give the impression that it will be around much longer, but those bets coming in that you can't see are impossible to quantify. The owners of the park must see them, as they took a $25 million renovation proposal to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in late February to revamp the grandstand and amenities.
